Douglas E. Dulen – December 7, 2023

Hemlock, NY: At age 72, Doug passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Strong Memorial Hospital surrounded by family and friends. He was born on January 12, 1951, to his late parents, Donald and Eva (Strlecki) Dulen. Doug was a proud father and grandfather. He is survived by his daughters; Shanna (Tyler) Heun, Trina (Josh) Dulen, and his sons; Michael Dulen, Douglas (Alicia) Dulen Jr., and Brian Dulen. He has four grandchildren; Lucas, Dagny, Fitzgerald Heun and Douglas E. Dulen, III.

Doug earned his undergraduate degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology. In 1978, Doug moved to Honeoye. The early 1980’s defined Doug’s commitment to the hamlet of Honeoye, where he began investing in the community through small business ownership. Doug knew the importance of investing in Honeoye, its people and how this would build the community. His first small business in the township was the Valley Inn in the early 1980’s. In 1988, he opened Honeoye Auto Parts which has been in business for 35 years.

Doug’s passion for dirt racing was actualized in 1985 when he began sponsoring drivers with Land of Legends. This past race season, he saw Doug Jr. on the dirt track for his inaugural season. The pride and emotion radiated on Doug’s face for his son who is carrying out his passion.

Doug was an avid outdoorsman who loved his property, hunting and travel. Those who knew him best appreciated his sense of humor and work hard, play hard lifestyle. This loss is felt greatly by his family, friends, race community and entire Honeoye community. His contagious smile, humor and prankster antics will be missed by all who loved him.

Honoring Doug’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Gary G. Patterson – November 18, 2023

Lima/Livonia:  At age 82, Gary passed peacefully on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, NY.  He was born on September 23, 1941, in Rochester, NY to the late Carson “Jack” and Evelyn (Gray) Patterson.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Sylvia Patterson.  Survived by his wife of 61 years, Elsie (Downey) Patterson; daughter Cheryl (John) Lavery of Livonia; and grandchildren, Meghan Lavery and Brendan Lavery as well as other close family and friends.

Gary was raised in the town of Hemlock, where he attended school until his class merged with Livonia. As a young man, Gary worked on the family farm for his uncle, Harmon Gray. During this time, he met his beautiful bride Elsie while she was waitressing at the Milky Way in the village of Livonia. The two fell in love and were wed on August 11, 1962, at St. Michael’s Church in Livonia Center. Shortly after, they moved into their home in Lima, where they lived happily together for all 61 of their married years.

In the early 60’s, Gary purchased the Keystone Gas Station in the village of Livonia, a community staple which he owned and operated for many years to support his family. Gary and Elsie welcomed their daughter Cheryl in 1969, raising her with fond memories of that home on Clay Street.

Among these memories are the Lima Rodeo, which Gary and Elsie operated out of the field across from their house. The Rodeo drew crowds of thousands, celebrating the skill and toughness of cowboys like Gary, who served as a pickup man. He would rescue other riders and wrangle the horses and bulls, while occasionally riding a bull or two himself. Gary made a band of good friends through the rodeo who remain close to his family to this day.

Although he was a Lima resident, Gary’s heart never left Livonia. He served his community as a member of the Livonia Fire Department, as well as the Livonia Rotary, which he chaired as the president in the 70s. He gave countless hours and built strong bonds with his fellow Rotarians, who have shown up for his family time and time again throughout the years.

Some of these connections include members of the Hemlock Little World’s Fair Board, of which Gary was a proud member for many years. The Hemlock Fair was a yearly staple in Gary’s life: a week to celebrate the community and agriculture that he held so dear. He passed this love on to Cheryl and his grandchildren, who in later years would look forward to finding him seated at the Sawmill, shaded from the July heat.

Gary loved model trains, constructing an elaborate layout in the basement of his Clay Street home. The layout, named “Cherel Valley” after his wife and daughter, is an entire world modeled after the mountains of Colorado that Gary once visited by train with Elsie. Cherel Valley transports us back in time to the early settlers of the wild west, featuring intricate miniatures and operational model trains that wind through landscapes of red rocks and alpines. The layout is so detailed and expansive that it has been featured in magazines, drawing admiration from near and far. Gary found deep connections with other train enthusiasts, and he was so beloved by his close circle that they nicknamed him “Bubba.”

But perhaps above all, Gary loved his family. He was devoted to his wife Elsie, often taking her for milkshakes (although nothing could beat the Milky Way). Nicknaming his daughter “Scooter,” his love for Cheryl knew no bounds, finding gratitude in her care for him despite any struggles he faced with his health. And “Grampy” held a deep affection for his grandchildren, “Meggers” and “Super B,” who he always encouraged and advised with unfailing wisdom. He had a soft spot for little dogs, and his furry companion Middy will miss spending afternoons on his lap.

The family would like to thank those who gave such thoughtful medical attention to Gary, including Wendy (Dechau) Thompson and Sally Collins, as well as Dr. Brian Smith from UR Cancer Center, Dr. Tallman of Mount Morris, and Anne Finch from Thompson Health ICU.

No calling hours will be held.  A graveside service and burial will be held privately at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Livonia, NY.  A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Sunday, June 9 th , at 2pm at the Hemlock Fairgrounds, 7370 Fair Street, Hemlock, NY.  At 2:30pm there will be a Memorial Service to share stories of Gary’s Life.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hemlock Fair Association, PO Box 263, Hemlock, NY 14466 or to the Sands Cancer Center, 395 West Street, Suite 101, Canandaigua, NY 14424.  To send a condolence or share a memory please visit:  www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com

He is predeceased by his beloved grandfathers Helmut Breidenstein and Martin Zillmann. Alex was a kind and gentle person who will be missed dearly not only by his family, but by his many friends, especially Dalton Sauers and Shane Sidlowskus and their families.

Alex was born in Rochester and grew up in Honeoye, New York. He graduated from Honeoye Central School District in 2011 and went on to attend Fingerlakes Community College. Alex was a respected supervisor at Artisan Meats in Canandaigua and also worked at Party Man Catering, and enjoyed working in an industry that he considered to be a part of his family roots.

Alex was a loving “old soul” who was interested in living life and being the best person he could be. At his core, Alex was a collector, and from a young age enjoyed collecting anything from things, to talents and hobbies, to friends.  Alex often showed his love for others, including strangers, in quiet ways, and went out of his way to help those in need.  In high school he befriended those who seemed lonely or were picked on, and at the grocery store you could find him helping elderly people carry their groceries to their cars.

Alex loved to collect knowledge, from trying to master discrete math, to learning how to be a dungeon master in Dungeons and Dragons. He learned how to build computers with his friends and then helped others build their own.

Alex was a gamer and interested in collecting any kind of game, including both board games and video games. His first gaming passion was The Legend of Zelda, and he even learned how to play the ocarina, a musical instrument showcased in the game. He later followed his brothers into the world of Halo and StarCraft, where he found his passion for multi-player role playing games. He had a network of friends with whom he loved to game, whether they were sitting on their own computer next to him, or on the other side of the country.

Alex was a musician in the Honeoye Central School Band and Jazz Band, where he participated in scholastic music festivals and marched in the Hemlock and Honeoye Memorial Day Parades. He was selected to play the trombone because of his great ear for notes, and also played the tuba and sousaphone at school.  Alex later taught himself how to play guitar, ukulele, drums, and tried to tackle the didgeridoo. His love for music was diverse and ranged from classical, to jazz, to international indie music, rock, and heavy metal. It was always interesting to hear what was playing when he picked you up in his car.

Alex also recently rediscovered his love for the outdoors, and would often go hiking with friends and family in various spots around the area.

Greene, but was widowed at a young age, somehow managing to bring up four children on her own.  Although resources may have been tight at times, her children never knew scarcity.  Like her mother Margaret, Pat was unique to the core, choosing her own way and never shy about expressing her opinion. She was deeply proud of the children she had with Bob, who were each as unique as Pat.

In the 1980s, she met the love of her life, Barry Smith, and eventually heeded her children’s pleas to not let that gem of a man get away. Pat and Barry married in 1994, adding three children to her family. Pat saw in each of them the caring soul she loved in Barry. In 1998, Pat and Barry moved to their country house on a hill in Sparta, which they filled with their love and the love of their children and grandchildren.

In 2012, Pat found her little bit of paradise with Barry in Beverly Beach, FL, where she enjoyed the heat, the ocean, and her special porch.  Her smile warmed the hearts of anyone who saw it, and her face would beam when she would talk about Barry, her children, or her grandchildren.  Her cooking was also unique, but it may have been part of her master plan to teach her children how to fend for themselves in the kitchen.  She drove a stick-shift, taught her children how to as well, ran 10k races, and never turned down a glass of good red wine, or a dish of maple-walnut ice cream. She loved her sister dearly, and with the two of them now together, heaven just became a little more perfect.  We miss her dearly, and are grateful for her loving presence in our lives.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023 11:00 AM at the Union Cemetery in Scottsburg. Memorial contributions may be made in Pat’s name to: UR Medicine Palliative Care-Wilmot Cancer Institute 601 Elmwood Ave, Rochester, NY 14642 or  https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/medicine/palliative-care/giving.aspx.
