Canandaigua, NY:  At age 90, Gilbert passed peacefully on August 21, 2023.  He was born on February 24, 1933 in Rochester, NY to the late Clayton and Emily (Beach) Smith.  In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his son Theodore “Ted” Smith and brother Wendel Smith.  Survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Richeen “Richie” (Hettinger) Smith; children, Sheri (Allan) Baldwin of FL, Kim (Ellen Cornett) Smith of Honeoye, and Douglas (Nancy) Smith of IN; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; also survived by many other loving family and friends including his church family at the First United Methodist Church of Canandaigua.

A son, a nephew, a brother, a husband, a father, an uncle, a grandfather and a great grandfather. A humble man of faith, family and history. A runner, sailor, outdoor lover. We are grateful he shared his life with us.

A Memorial Service to Celebrate Gil’s Life will be held at 3pm on Saturday, September 2 ^nd , at the First United Methodist Church of Canandaigua, 100 North Main Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424, with military honors.  A reception will follow the service and all are welcome.  Interment will be held privately.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church at the address above or to the Ontario County Historical Society, 55 North Main Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424.  To send a condolence or share a memory please visit:  www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com
