Theresa (Terry) Anna Rose Steingasser was born in Tonawanda, NY. Her family moved to Cheese Factory Road in Honeoye Falls, NY when she was young. After graduating from Honeoye Falls, she had several jobs; selling candy at a local store in Honeoye Falls, working at the Kodak Hawkeye plant during the war, and then as a social worker at Industry, NY. She and John Shelly were married on May 29, 1943 at St. Michael’s Church in Livonia Center. Their first “home” was 117 Big Tree Street in Livonia where they resided with John’s sisters Theresa, Catharine, Millie and brother Ed. The front parlor in the house was their living room. They lived many places over the years — Cadyville, Sibleyville, and Rush. John and Terry were Cottage Parents at Industry, a state run home for 25 young boys. When John retired due to his disability, she became the Head Housekeeper overseeing all the cottages at Industry. Following John’s death, Terry moved back to Honeoye Falls for several years before migrating to Lake Placid, Florida and marrying Henry Mc Bride. Upon his death, Terry purchased a smaller home in Lake Placid and remained there until October, 2009 when she returned north and resided at Fleming Point, a beautiful senior living center in Greece, NY.
Terry was a loving wife, mother, aunt and friend. She had a special style, grace, warmth, and caring for others that showed in everything that she did. She will always be remembered for her thoughtful and caring nature as well as her great German Chocolate cakes with chocolate icing and walnuts, a favorite at all Shelly gatherings. Terry handled all of life’s challenges with grace and dignity, especially as she lovingly cared for John as well as her parents. Her acceptance of life’s challenges, including her recent ill health, reflected her faith in the Lord.
Her family takes comfort in the happiness of knowing that she is with the Lord. We are especially grateful for the outpouring of love and support from family and friends. We are deeply indebted to the wonderful staff and volunteers at Sunset House, a home which exists to provide support and care for people in the last phase of an incurable illness.
