Honeoye: Born October 15, 1928 “Lenny” passed away peacefully on August 17, 2021. Blessed to live a full life even with its challenges over the last few years, especially after living without his soulmate, Marie. But Len was a man with determination, and each time his children were sure he would have to leave his home, the home he built himself after purchasing the land at the age of 16, he would come up with an approach that allowed him to stay. Home wasn’t lonely because home was filled with memories…of Marie, the five kids, the 11 grandchildren, and the great grandchildren.
Sometime during their teen years Len and Marie – kids from Rochester who spent summers on Honeoye Lake – met each other. Upon graduating from Monroe High School Len entered the Navy. On his way to Honolulu, during a stopover in San Francisco, he mailed Marie a ring and asked her to marry him. They married in Hawaii and started their family. Upon reentering civilian life he then started, and later ended, his career at Rochester Telephone. He was volunteer firefighter and a member of the Honeoye Legion. He could “fix” anything, although he subscribed to the philosophy of “that’s good enough” which meant if something worked there was no need for it to be perfect. He and Marie traveled across the US and beyond with their dogs in his “Gizmo” motorhome. He loved a great joke, and he loved his children. Missing him will be Michael (Mary Ann), Spencer (Mechele), Bridget (David Seconi), Matthew (Nadine) and Careen. Known by his grandchild as “Animal” he leaves behind Allison (Donnie Mueller) & Michael (Jenna Goldstein) Shumway, Justin (Sarah), Matteo & David Spencer (Rebekka) Seconi, Zachary, Linnea (Darrel), Joshua & Samantha (Curtis) Shumway, and Rafael and Marie (Carlas) Barreto. Bringing additional joy to his life were great-grandchildren Hazel, Zelda and Olive Seconi and Ezra Shumway He leaves a sister, Diana Beisheim and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass which will be held on his 93 rd birthday, Friday October 15th, at 10:30am at St. Mary’s Church, 8961 Main Street, Honeoye. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Honeoye, which will then be followed by a remembrance luncheon. Those wishing, donations may be directed to Honeoye Hemlock American Legion Post 1278, P.O. Lenny and Marie were bowling league mixed doubles partners with my Dad,Ellis Alger, and 17 year old me at lanes near Long Point Park. Lenny and Dad kept us in stitches!!
I was trying to figure out how to get a 7-10 split!
Lenny said,”You can do it! It’s easy! It’s just like pickin your nose !”
I had to stop laughing before I could throw the ball…….. and miss the split!
Lenny was a gem..

Wonderful obit and comments. Len appears to be one of those terrific “salt of the earth” men. No wonder Bridget is such a sweetheart. Her dad seems filled with kindness and he looks handsome too. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. I am truly sorry for your loss.

Blessings to all the Shumways on the passing of your father and grand father. Marie and Lenny, Dotty and Bruce Campbell ,and a few of us younger gals would go skiing to Vermont during our February break from teaching at Fairport Schools. We always had a great time and celebrated their February 14th Anniversary. I will be sending a contribution to the Post in his name.
This is a wonderful insight into your father’s life.
I especially enjoyed his philosophy on fixing things. In fact I am going to start using that myself.
Your father was a friend to many and will be missed.

So sorry to hear the passing of Lenny. We bowled with Marie and Lenny for many years. The last time we visited with them was at FL Racino. They were having lunch at the buffet and they asked us to join them. They were a wonderful couple. We have missed Marie and will miss Lenny. To the entire Shumway family, Amy and I just want you to know how sad we are to hear that your dad has passed but for sure he is in a much better place now. We cannot think of a more kinder man with a heart of gold. He always made it a point to shake our hands after going to Communion at Sunday’s Mass.
